Breakthrough in the Reform of EU Asylum Policy

After more than 7 years of occasionally heated debates, Member States have agreed on a common position on two core pieces of asylum legislation. German politicians have reacted with mixed feelings: while domestic debates have yearned for a ‘European solution’ for years, some lament restrictive tendencies or the absence of immediate effects on the overburdened German reception system. Daniel Thym discusses the compromise with various media channels, amongst others in a 45-minute debate with the public radio channel DEUTSCHLANDFUNK KULTUR (‘Verschärfte EU-Migrationsregeln – Kommt jetzt die Asylwende?’), in the digital format of the public television BERICHT AUS BERLIN EXTRA (‘Eure Fragen an Daniel Thym’), in interviews with DIE WELT ('Sehr viele Migranten werden nach Deutschland weiterziehen')NRD 2 (‘Migrationsforscher begrüßt Vorschläge für EU-Asylreform’) and DEUTSCHLANDFUNK ('Viel Kritik an Asylreform, aber doch auch Fortschritt?', ab Minute 9’40 Uhr) as well as in expert opinions in BERICHT AUS BERLIN and TAGESTHEMEN. Media reports in the weeks thereafter include the Schwäbische Zeitung and Die Welt.
