Conference: Germany as a ‘Country of Immigration’

For many years, the use of the label ‘country of immigration’ has served as a rhetorical device to indicate the position of the speaker in the German public discourse. Statistics show that there is a little doubt that the informal title cannot be denied any longer. What is less clear, however, are the normative and practical consequences. Recognising that migration will continue to shape the German society does not, in itself, present a blueprint for the design of entry and integration policies. A symposium, organised at the University of Konstanz on 11/12 May 2023, will confront these questions head-on. Speakers include leading academics at different levels of seniority from across Germany. They will identify the defining features and normative choices underlying the legal status quo, both with regard to entry on the territory and equal membership. More information on the program and participation can be found on the conference website (in German).
